Two honest caveats on the savings column. First, generation estimates assume a reasonably well-oriented, unshaded roof at typical south-coast yields — a north-facing or heavily shaded roof will produce less, and I will tell you so at survey rather than after installation. Second, your actual saving depends on how much generation you use in the home versus export: as of mid-2026, export tariffs vary widely between suppliers (roughly 12p–25p/kWh on common flat and fixed tariffs, and rates change at short notice), so always confirm the live rate with your supplier. Installing Solar in Hampshire: The Local Details That Matter

The south-coast yield advantage

Well-oriented systems along the Solent corridor typically achieve around 950–1,050 kWh per kWp per year — comfortably above what the same panels would produce across most of the Midlands and the North. It is not a dramatic difference and I will never pretend Hampshire is the Mediterranean, but over a 25-year panel life those extra kilowatt-hours compound into a meaningfully shorter payback for the identical system. It is one of the quiet reasons solar stacks up well here.

Conservation areas and listed buildings

Hampshire is dense with conservation areas — Winchester district alone has 37 and Southampton has 20, and Winchester's historic core and Southampton's Old Town are the two I am asked about most. Roof-mounted solar usually remains permitted development in a conservation area: the specific extra restriction is that panels cannot be fitted to a wall fronting a highway, and every installation must be sited to minimise its effect on the building's appearance — that siting condition is what councils lean on when a prominent, highway-facing roof slope is involved, so it pays to get the layout right first time. SSEN and the grid paperwork

Hampshire sits in the SSEN (Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks) southern licence area, and every grid-connected system needs either a G98 notification (systems up to 3.68 kW per phase, notified after connection) or G99 approval (larger systems, which need SSEN's sign-off before installation). G99 applications can add weeks if they are handled late or badly. I submit and manage all SSEN paperwork myself as standard — it is part of the job, not an extra, and it is one of the things that goes wrong most often when installation is subcontracted out.

Solar Together Hampshire

Hampshire County Council runs periodic rounds of Solar Together, a group-buying scheme where pre-vetted installers bid at auction to supply registered households; registration is free and typically opens in late summer with an auction in the autumn. It is a legitimate scheme and a useful benchmark. My honest advice: register if a round is open, then compare the group offer against a fixed quote from a local installer who has actually stood on your roof — group-buy pricing is based on a desktop assessment, and the installing company may be travelling from well outside the county. I am always happy to price against a Solar Together offer like-for-like.

The Brands I Fit in Hampshire — and One I No Longer Do

I deliberately work with a small number of battery and inverter platforms rather than fitting whatever is cheapest that month. It means I know each system inside out — commissioning, app setup, firmware quirks and all — and you get one person accountable for the lot.

  • GoodWe — a long-established inverter manufacturer whose Lynx Home battery ranges scale from around 5 kWh to 30+ kWh. Proven, well-supported kit that I trust on both simple and awkward installs.

One brand is deliberately absent. GivEnergy Ltd entered administration on 9 April 2026 and no new hardware warranties are being honoured by the company, so I no longer fit GivEnergy equipment — a warranty I cannot stand behind is not one I will sell you. If you already own a GivEnergy system: the app and monitoring portal continue to run under a separate company (GivEnergy Software Ltd), your panels and battery keep working, and I still service and maintain existing GivEnergy installations across Hampshire. Which Hampshire roof types can solar panels be fitted to?

New builds and re-roofs suit in-roof panels, which sit flush within the roofline. Slate and flat roofs need specific fixings and a little more care, which is reflected in the quote — never a reason to refuse the job.

Should I add a battery at the same time as my panels, or later?

If you can stretch to it, at the same time: you save on a second visit and setup, the system is designed as one, and both the panels and the battery qualify for 0% VAT until 31 March 2027. That said, batteries retrofitted to existing solar also currently qualify for 0% VAT, so adding one later is a perfectly sound route — I fit retrofit batteries across Hampshire regularly.
