Can my EV charger use solar power to charge my car?

Yes — this is the biggest advantage of solar-integrated chargers like the Zappi. It monitors your solar generation in real time and diverts surplus solar energy into your car before exporting to the grid. On a sunny day with a 4kW system, you can add 15-25 miles of range per hour from free solar. The charger uses grid power when needed, prioritising solar first.

How fast does a home EV charger charge?

A standard 7kW home charger adds approximately 25-30 miles of range per hour. For a typical 60kWh EV battery, a full charge from empty takes 8-9 hours — ideal for overnight. A 22kW three-phase charger (for three-phase properties) adds approximately 75-85 miles/hr. SigEnergy's integrated 25kW DC charger is even faster — approximately 80-90 miles/hr from battery storage.

Do I need planning permission for a home EV charger?

No. Domestic EV charger installations fall under permitted development in England. No planning application is required, regardless of conservation areas. The only exception is listed buildings, where listed building consent may be needed. We handle all installation certification and OZEV compliance documentation.

What is smart charging and why does it matter?

Smart charging allows your EV charger to communicate with your energy tariff, solar system, and the grid to charge at the most economical time. On Octopus Intelligent, your car is automatically scheduled to charge when electricity is cheapest (often 7-8p/kWh between midnight and 5am vs 25-28p during peak hours). Combined with solar self-consumption, smart charging can reduce your annual EV running cost by £400-700 vs unmanaged charging.

Can you install an EV charger without solar panels?

Absolutely. Many customers install an EV charger independently of solar. A standalone smart charger costs £700-1,200 installed and can be upgraded to solar integration later when solar panels are added. We recommend leaving cable provision for solar integration even on standalone installs — it saves significant re-work if you add solar later.

What is V2H (vehicle-to-home) and can I get it?

V2H (vehicle-to-home) allows your electric car battery to power your home during outages or peak rate periods. It requires: a compatible bidirectional EV (Nissan Leaf gen 2+, MG4, BYD Atto 3, certain Kia/Hyundai models) and a V2H-capable system. The SigEnergy SigenStor includes full V2H capability. A typical EV battery of 40-75kWh can power a Hampshire home for 1-3 days. We assess V2H compatibility at your free site survey.

How long does EV charger installation take?
