MCS Certification vs HIES Membership: What They Mean

When choosing a solar installer, two accreditations matter more than any others: MCS certification and HIES membership. These are not optional extras or marketing badges. MCS certification is legally required for you to claim Smart Export Guarantee payments, while HIES membership provides insurance-backed consumer protection. This guide explains what each means, why they matter, and how to verify them.

What Is MCS Certification?

MCS stands for Microgeneration Certification Scheme. It is the UK quality assurance scheme for small-scale renewable energy installations including solar panels, battery storage, heat pumps, and wind turbines. MCS certification covers both the installer company and the products they install.

An MCS-certified installer has demonstrated competence through assessment and audit, uses MCS-certified products that meet rigorous performance standards, follows MCS installation standards (MIS 3002 for solar PV), provides proper documentation including an MCS certificate for every installation, and submits to regular surveillance audits to maintain their certification.

For homeowners, MCS certification is not just a quality marker. It is a legal requirement for eligibility for the Smart Export Guarantee (SEG), the scheme that pays you for electricity exported to the grid. Without an MCS certificate for your installation, you cannot register for SEG payments, which can be worth £100-300+ per year.

MCS certification also provides access to the MCS Installation Database, which records every certified installation in the UK. This database provides a permanent record of your system specification and installation details, which can be valuable when selling your home or making warranty claims.

  • Legal requirement for Smart Export Guarantee eligibility
  • Covers both installer competence and product quality
  • Regular surveillance audits maintain standards
  • Installation recorded on national MCS database
  • Required for some finance and mortgage products
Important

Never use a non-MCS-certified installer for your solar panels. Without MCS certification, you cannot claim SEG payments, may face issues with your home insurance, and have no recourse through the MCS complaints procedure if things go wrong.

What Is HIES Membership?

HIES stands for Home Insulation and Energy Systems Contractors Scheme. It is a government-endorsed consumer protection body specifically for the domestic renewable energy sector. HIES members must comply with a strict code of practice and provide insurance-backed guarantees on all installations.

The HIES Consumer Code covers the entire customer journey from initial contact through to after-sales support. Members must provide clear and accurate pre-sales information, transparent written quotations, proper contracts with cooling-off periods, compliant installation practices, and effective complaints handling procedures.

The most important protection HIES provides is the Insurance Backed Guarantee (IBG). This is a separate insurance policy that covers your installation warranty if the installing company ceases to trade. Given that the solar industry has seen several company failures in recent years, this protection is extremely valuable.

HIES also operates an independent dispute resolution service. If you have a complaint about an HIES member that cannot be resolved directly, HIES will investigate and can require the member to take corrective action. In serious cases, HIES can suspend or remove a member from the scheme.

  • Government-endorsed consumer protection body
  • Insurance Backed Guarantee (IBG) protects if installer goes bust
  • Strict code of practice covering entire customer journey
  • Independent dispute resolution service
  • Mandatory cooling-off periods on all contracts
  • Regular compliance audits of members
Did You Know

HIES Insurance Backed Guarantees typically cover your installation for 10 years. If your installer ceases trading during this period, the insurance will pay for another accredited company to honour the warranty. This protection alone makes HIES membership essential.

How to Verify an Installer Credentials

Verifying that a solar installer holds genuine MCS certification and HIES membership takes just a few minutes and could save you thousands of pounds and significant stress. Both organisations maintain public registers that anyone can search.

To verify MCS certification, visit the MCS website at mcscertified.com and use the Find an Installer tool. Enter the company name or postcode to see their certification status, certificate number, and the technologies they are certified to install. The register is updated regularly, so a company appearing on it has current, valid certification.

To verify HIES membership, visit hiesscheme.org.uk and use the Find a Member search. Enter the company name to see their membership status and the technologies they cover. HIES membership must be renewed annually, so a current listing confirms active membership.

Be cautious of companies that display MCS or HIES logos on their website or marketing materials without current membership. Logos can be copied easily, and some companies continue to use them after their certification has lapsed or been withdrawn. Always verify through the official registers before committing to an installation.

  • MCS register: mcscertified.com - Find an Installer
  • HIES register: hiesscheme.org.uk - Find a Member
  • Check both before signing any contract
  • Verify certificate numbers match the company name
  • Logos alone are not proof of current membership
Pro Tip

Ask your installer for their MCS certificate number and HIES membership number upfront. A reputable installer will provide these immediately and be happy for you to verify them. Reluctance to share these details is a significant red flag.

Other Accreditations to Look For

While MCS and HIES are the two essential accreditations, several other certifications indicate additional quality and professionalism. None of these are substitutes for MCS and HIES, but they provide additional reassurance.

RECC (Renewable Energy Consumer Code) is an older consumer code that was widely used before HIES became the dominant scheme. Some installers hold both HIES and RECC membership. NAPIT and NICEIC are electrical competent person schemes that certify electrical installation competence. While separate from MCS, they indicate the installer team includes qualified electricians who can self-certify Part P electrical work.

Manufacturer accreditations from brands like Fox ESS, GoodWe, and SigEnergy indicate the installer has been trained and approved by the equipment manufacturer. This typically means access to better warranty support, technical assistance, and sometimes priority stock allocation. We hold manufacturer accreditations from all four brands we install.

Trustmark is a government-endorsed quality scheme that covers general home improvement work. While not specific to solar, Trustmark registration indicates the company meets minimum standards for business practices, technical competence, and customer service.

  • RECC: Renewable Energy Consumer Code (older consumer code)
  • NAPIT/NICEIC: Electrical competent person schemes
  • Manufacturer accreditations: brand-specific training and approval
  • Trustmark: government-endorsed quality scheme
  • None of these replace MCS and HIES as core requirements

Why Solent Solar Holds Both MCS and HIES

We believe MCS certification and HIES membership should be non-negotiable for any solar installer. They represent the minimum standard of professionalism, competence, and consumer protection that every homeowner deserves.

Our MCS certification covers solar PV installation and battery storage. Every installation we complete is registered on the MCS database, providing you with a permanent record of your system. Our HIES membership means every customer receives an Insurance Backed Guarantee as standard, protecting your investment regardless of what happens to our company in the future.

Beyond these core accreditations, we hold manufacturer accreditations from SigEnergy, Fox ESS, and GoodWe. This means our installation team has completed brand-specific training on every product we install, ensuring your system is installed to the manufacturer exact specification and your warranty is fully protected.

We are happy to provide our MCS certificate number and HIES membership number to any prospective customer for verification. Transparency about accreditation is a hallmark of a trustworthy installer, and we encourage all homeowners to verify credentials before signing any contract.
