Can I get the EV charger grant if I rent a house rather than a flat?

Yes. The flats-and-renters chargepoint grant covers tenants of houses as well as flats, provided the property has dedicated private off-street parking you can access at all times, you have an eligible EV (owned, leased or on order), and your landlord gives permission before you apply.

Do I need my landlord's permission before applying?

Yes, and the order matters: permission from your landlord, freeholder or managing agent must be in place before you apply, and the charger must not be installed until OZEV confirms your grant. Install early and you forfeit the £500 with no way to claim it back.

Can I take the charger with me when I move out?

Practically, choose an untethered charger: the socket unit stays on the wall (your landlord keeps an EV-ready property) and your charging cable moves with you. Removing a wired-in charger from a rental usually needs landlord agreement and an electrician, so most tenants leave the unit and take the cable.

I have no driveway — can I still get the £500 grant?

Possibly, since 1 April 2026. The flats-and-renters grant still requires private off-street parking, but a separate EV chargepoint grant for households with on-street parking now offers up to £500 — provided the charger is installed with a permanent, council-approved cross-pavement solution (a charging gully or cable channel, not a temporary cable cover) and the local highways authority gives permission. Cross-pavement channels are already offered on Southampton streets, Portsmouth is rolling out over 300 on-street lamppost and bollard chargepoints for residents without driveways, and Southampton's EV charging strategy commits to expanding on-street provision.

When does the £500 EV chargepoint grant end?

The current schemes are confirmed until 31 March 2027, with no announced successor. The rate rose from £350 to £500 per socket on 1 April 2026, so this is the most generous — and final confirmed — year of the scheme. Allow time for landlord permission, OZEV confirmation and an install slot before the deadline.
